것The deal

김밥 (gim·bap) is rice spread on a sheet of 김 (gim), laver, rolled around a line of fillings and sliced. Visit Korea's page lists the usual line: carrot, spinach, cucumber, burdock and pickled radish. The variations that sell now are tuna with mayonnaise and a perilla leaf, cheese, and a roll with egg in place of rice for people avoiding carbohydrate.

More about it

One roll costs just under 4,000 won in Seoul. The Korea Consumer Agency's survey put the Seoul average at 3,923 won in September 2026, up 300 won, or 8.3%, on a year earlier, the steepest rise of the eight dishes it tracks (Hankyung, 19 October 2026). The national average was 3,511 won.

The small one is 마약김밥 (ma·yak·gim·bap), the 'drug' gimbap of 광장시장 (gwang·jang·si·jang), named for being hard to stop eating. Visit Seoul puts the market's food alley at 9:00 to 23:00 daily and exit 8 of Jongno 5-ga station, line 1, about sixty metres away.

하는 법How to

Order by the 줄 (jul), the roll. It travels well: Visit Korea pairs it with a bowl of 라면 or 우동 and suggests dipping a slice in tteokbokki sauce. The chains it names are 고봉민김밥 for tuna and pork-cutlet rolls, 오토김밥 in Itaewon for a wasabi roll, and 통통김밥 in Namdaemun Market for a roll that is one part rice to nine parts filling.
