것The deal
비빔밥 (bi·bim·bap) is a bowl of rice with 나물 (na·mul), seasoned vegetables, laid on top in sections, plus meat, fish, seaweed or an egg depending on the kitchen. You add 고추장 (go·chu·jang) and sesame oil and mix the whole thing before the first spoon. The Korean Food Promotion Institute's magazine (27 August 2021) gives the old name 화반 (hwa·ban), flower rice, for the way the colours are laid out, and prints the recipe from the cookbook 시의전서 that layers each cooked ingredient over rice before mixing. One origin story has it starting with the leftovers of ancestral rites; the magazine files that as a theory.

A bowl in Seoul reached 12,000 won in September 2026 in the Korea Consumer Agency's survey, up 423 won on the year (Hankyung, 19 October 2026). The national average was 10,330 won.
