것The deal

떡볶이 (tteok·bok·ki) is 떡 (tteok), rice cake cut into short sticks, cooked in a red 고추장 (go·chu·jang) sauce with sheets of fish cake and often a boiled egg. Visit Korea's dish page lists the extras people add now, cheese first, and a soy-sauce version for anyone who cannot take the heat.

More about it

Seoul's address for it is Sindang-dong. 신당동 떡볶이 골목 (sin·dang·dong tteok·bok·ki gol·mok) grew in the late 1970s and was famous by the 1980s, when each place had its own DJ booth; the owner of 마복림 할머니 떡볶이 says it was sold there from 1953. The dish started as rice cake in gochujang and picked up eggs, glass noodles, fish cake, instant noodles and, lately, squid, prawn and cheese. The alley is at 10-18 Dasan-ro 33-gil, Jung-gu, and Visit Seoul says the district runs a tteokbokki festival every year.

Busan does it differently. Visit Busan's street-food page says the stalls in 부평깡통시장 (bu·pyeong·kkang·tong·si·jang) use thick 가래떡 (ga·rae·tteok) and sell 물떡 (mul·tteok), plain rice cake on a skewer in fish-cake broth, a Busan and Gyeongsang habit.

하는 법How to

At a street stall it is ladled into a cup or onto a plate and you eat it with a skewer; at a snack shop you order it by the portion. Visit Korea's gimbap page suggests dipping a slice of gimbap in the sauce.
