것The deal

붕어빵 (bung·eo·ppang), carp bread, is batter poured into a fish-shaped iron mould with a spoon of sweet red bean in the middle, closed and turned over a flame. No fish is involved. Visit Korea's Hallyu Insight page (10 December 2025) records the current argument, 팥 (pat) red bean against 슈크림 (syu·keu·rim) custard, and the newer fillings: rice cake, cheese, chocolate, pizza.

More about it

Koreans hunt for it. The same page explains 붕세권 (bung·se·gwon), a play on 역세권, the catchment of a station: a neighbourhood with a bungeoppang cart you can walk to. It names Seoul's three districts for it, 남영동, the streets around 효창공원, and 광장시장, and says the popular stalls sell out early. On I Live Alone, Seolhyun kept a count toward a hundred in one winter. Some shops now sell it all year.

The price has doubled in three winters. Kyongbuk Ilbo priced Pohang stalls on 7 November 2024: three for 2,000 won, or 1,000 won each, where it had been three for 1,000 two or three years earlier; red bean, flour and LPG had all gone up. Jeonnam Ilbo found the same three for 2,000 won in Gwangju on 2 November 2026.

하는 법How to

Carts appear when the weather turns. Pohang residents share stall prices through an app and local groups (Kyongbuk Ilbo); in Seoul, start at the three districts Visit Korea names.
