삼각김밥 (sam·gak·gim·bap) is a triangle of pressed rice with a spoon of filling in the middle and a sheet of laver kept apart from the rice by the wrapper until you open it. It is the convenience store's cheapest meal and the one it keeps re-engineering.
In 2026 all three big chains rebuilt the rice and kept the price where it was (Business Watch, 21 October 2026). Seven-Eleven moved every triangle to its 올 뉴 line in April. GS25's 소프트 삼각김밥, from June, presses the rice up to 30% less, which makes the triangle 0.3 to 0.5 cm thicker. CU switched in September to soft water for cooking the rice, which it says keeps more than 20% more moisture in by the sell-by time.
Kyunghyang priced the shelf in April 2025: the cheapest own-brand tuna-mayo triangle was 1,100 won, the typical one had moved from about 1,000 won to about 1,500, and some passed 2,000 won.
Chilled shelf, till, then the microwave by the window if you want it warm. Business Watch's tester ate Seven-Eleven's cold and found the rice still chewy.
Could you heat this up?
