약과 (yak·gwa) is a biscuit of wheat flour worked with honey and sesame oil, pressed in a mould, deep-fried and then steeped in honey until it is soft and dark. The name means medicine sweet: honey counted as medicine when it was named (Korean Food Promotion Institute, 27 October 2023). It was a tea sweet of Goryeo temples and the court, and the Goryeosa records it impressing a banquet in Yuan China.
Then it became a thing to queue for. The institute's magazine describes people lining up before dessert shops open and racing for online reservations, which earned the word 약케팅 (yak·ke·ting), yakgwa ticketing, and a luxury brand putting a famous maker's set in its Chuseok gift range. Convenience stores followed with their own: Emart24 began selling 장인한과 미니약과 on 9 September 2026 (Newsis). Bridge Economy's report of 23 September 2026 lists yakgwa, with 양갱 and black sesame, as the first wave of the 할매니얼 (hal·mae·ni·eol) taste, grandmother plus millennial, which moved on to rice cake this year.
Buy a box at a department-store food hall or the single packs at a convenience store; the modern versions at cafés and bakeries are fusion sweets, the yakgwa folded into something else (the institute's magazine).
A box of yakgwa, please.
Today's yakgwa is sold out.
