탕후루 (tang·hu·ru) is fruit on a stick, strawberries, tangerine segments, grapes, dipped in sugar syrup that sets into a glass shell. It is Chinese by origin and arrived in Korea through takeaway chains; the biggest, 달콤왕가탕후루, still lists strawberry, tangerine, shine muscat, pineapple and cherry on its menu page, plus novelty shapes.
The boom broke. News1 reported on 15 April 2026 that 왕가탕후루's sales had fallen from about 25.6 billion won to about 2 billion in a year, a drop of 92%, and called it the warning case for restaurant fads. Xinhua's Seoul report (6 February 2026) still found tanghulu shops in Incheon's Chinatown and people making it at home alongside 마라탕 as part of a 'becoming Chinese' habit trend.
Pick the fruit from the case and eat it outside; the shell shatters and the syrup gets everywhere.
