것The deal
남대문시장 갈치조림골목 (gal·chi·jo·rim·gol·mok) is the hairtail alley at 남대문시장길 16-17. The dish is 갈치조림, cutlassfish braised with potato, radish and red-pepper paste; Visit Seoul says each shop buys its fish from 여수, 목포, 부산 or 제주. The shops started out selling 칼국수 and dumplings and switched to fish stews, and some also grill mackerel or hairtail for anyone who finds the stew too hot.
More about it
서울사랑, the Seoul city magazine, wrote in February 2017 that the lane took shape around 1988 and had more than fifteen restaurants, among them 전주식당, run by the founder's son. Visit Seoul lists the alley open from 03:00 to 21:00, with closing days differing shop by shop.

Come out of 회현역 (line 4) exit 5, turn right and go straight; the lane faces the 숭례문 import arcade and Visit Seoul puts it 179 metres from the exit. Ask for 생선구이 if you want something milder; Visit Seoul points to the shops that grill fish.
