The instant tax refund: show your passport at the till of a tax-free shop and the VAT comes off the price there, instead of claiming it back at the airport.

즉시환급 (jeuk·si·hwan·geup) is the on-the-spot version of Korea's tax refund for visitors. The Korea Tourism Organization's guide (updated 20 October 2025) sets the rules: you qualify if you are a foreigner staying under six months (overseas Koreans: two or more years abroad and under three months in Korea); the receipt must be 15,000 won or more; for the instant refund a single transaction must be under 1,000,000 won and your instant-refund total 5,000,000 won or less. The tax is taken off the shelf price as you pay, so nothing is owed to you later.

Above those limits, or in shops without the instant scheme, you get a refund voucher with your receipt and claim it another way: at a downtown refund counter or kiosk (single transactions up to 6,000,000 won; passport, voucher and a credit card needed), or at the airport after customs has confirmed the goods are leaving. The goods must leave Korea within three months of purchase, unopened and unused (Korea Customs Service). Cooked food, opened items and anything bought at a duty-free shop do not qualify.

Have your physical passport out before the till; Olive Young's Myeongdong store asks for the passport itself. Say 즉시환급 and the cashier scans it. At Incheon, the customs desk is on the third floor of Terminal 1 near check-in counters E and J, and the refund counters near gate 28 are staffed 07:00 to 22:00 with 24-hour kiosks beside them; Terminal 2's are near counters F and G and gates 225 to 274 (KTO guide). Keep the goods where you can show them; customs may ask.
