경의선숲길 (gyeong·ui·seon·sup·gil) runs 6.3 km from Gajwa station in Yeonnam-dong to the Wonhyo 1-dong community service centre in Yongsan, passing Hyochang Park station. Seoul built it on the surface after the Yongsan-to-Gajwa stretch of the line went underground: work started in 2011 and the whole route was finished in 2016. In 2018 the city named it a Seoul Future Heritage site.
More about it
The longest section is in Yeonnam-dong, right outside exit 3, and Visit Seoul calls it Yeontral Park, the stretch where people spread mats on the lawn with a beer. Some sections keep recreated rails and crossings, and old carriages are on show.
In the Yeonnam section there is a small stream called 세교실개천, a railway garden, a shelter built like a country station and a slow postbox: drop a postcard in and it goes out twice a year, around Seollal and Chuseok. Further along, by the Wau bridge, the stretch that was the Gyeongui Line Book Street is now 레드로드 발전소, the district's makers' booths.
