IVE closed a three week run for Looks Can Kill with a finger gun dance and a girl hero story

What it is

Looks Can Kill is IVE's fifth mini album. The group is six: 안유진, 가을, 레이, 장원영, 리즈 and 이서. The title track came out on its own on 19 October, and the full album followed on 26 October at 6 pm with six songs. Starship Entertainment calls it a spin off project built around a girl hero, one more alter ego after the Cupid and magical girl ideas of earlier releases. The company's line is that anyone can be the lead and the hero of their own life.

On stage the song comes with the 저격 댄스 (jeo·gyeok·daen·seu), the members pointing finger guns, and with position changes so fast they are hard to follow. 안유진 got the nickname 퀵진 after one switch that looks like teleporting, her name crossed with Quicksilver from the X Men films. The music video went up on the STARSHIP channel on 19 October, runs just over four minutes, and had 23,909,816 views by 3 November. The last shot is the members breaking character on set.

Why it took off

It landed in a packed month. Cineplay laid out the calendar on 9 October: NCT WISH, PLAVE, 성한빈 and Xdinary Heroes on 12 October, a SEVENTEEN unit and NMIXX on 19 October, BABYMONSTER on 23 October, and IVE, ILLIT and RIIZE together on 26 October. Cineplay quoted an industry source who called October and November the last window before year end award shows and next year's world tour set lists. For IVE it also came straight after the second world tour, SHOW WHAT I AM, which took in Kyocera Dome, Tokyo Dome and eight North American cities.

The chart climb came in steps. News1 traced it on the Melon daily chart: in at 63 on release day, 46 on 22 October after the first music show stage, then 32, 27 and 16, then 7 on 26 October and 6 on 27 October. The challenge did the pushing. 이영지, 이상이, NCT DREAM, PLAVE, KickFlip and others filmed the dance, and Starship said clips on IVE's official accounts had passed 100 million combined views. The song also topped the Circle download chart for 19 to 25 October, and IVE led the Hanteo weekly world chart two weeks running.

How to do it

Watch the music video first, on the STARSHIP YouTube channel. Then search the song title on TikTok or Instagram for the challenge clips. That is where the 저격 댄스 spread, along with the part fans call 꿍싯꿍싯, a cute run of small movements. News1 also lists an 아이빔 challenge and a vocal challenge built on the chorus.

The music show run is over. The last stage was SBS 인기가요 on 1 November, and Starship confirmed on 3 November that promotions had wrapped. The remixes keep coming. A version featuring Tiger JK dropped on 30 October, and a Captain Cuts remix is set for 4 November at 2 pm Korean time.

Where, if you want it

There is no place to go for this one. The closest the campaign came to the city was the coming soon teaser in September, which Breaknews described as projection mapping on a high rise with Seoul landmarks appearing behind it. The stages aired on SBS 인기가요 and the other weekly music shows through 1 November.
