성수동 수제화거리 (seong·su·dong su·je·hwa·geo·ri) is the reason Seongsu looks the way it does. Visit Seoul says about 70 percent of the country's handmade shoe makers are concentrated here, with design, production and sales in one district, and that the workshops take orders for shoes made to your foot. The city's own article calls it the biggest handmade shoe area in Korea.
More about it
The district office runs a showroom for it, the 성수 수제화 희망플랫폼 (hui·mang·peul·laet·pom) at 아차산로 53: pop-up stores and a showroom for local makers on the first floor, a leather-craft classroom on the second, and shoe-making programmes. Seoul's Oraegage list of old shops includes the street under the name of 유홍식, the city's handmade shoe master number one, and the JS슈즈디자인연구소 workshop that made Psy's shoes.
