명동 노점 (myeong·dong no·jeom) are the carts that turn the main street into a food market each evening. Yonhap's reporter stood on the street on Wednesday 24 June 2026 and watched the carts roll in at around four in the afternoon and form a 200-metre row; by seven there was no room to move. The menus that day ran from 닭꼬치 in 불닭 sauce, 떡볶이, 탕후루 and grilled scallops with cheese to hot dogs, octopus skewers, mini 김밥, grilled abalone, 붕어빵, 십원빵 and 소떡소떡.
Prices are posted. The 명동 복지회, the stallholders' association, told Yonhap that the 중구 district office printed one standard price tag per item for every cart after overcharging rows at other markets, and that each stall keeps a 50 or 60-litre bin and takes anyone's rubbish. When Maeil Business walked the street at four in the afternoon on 19 January 2024, every cart had a menu board; the prices it noted were 탕후루 5,000 won, 어묵 4,000 to 5,000 won, 야채전 5,000 won, 닭강정 10,000 won, 스테이크 15,000 won and a croissant-style 붕어빵 at 4,000 won each. The same article called them dearer than department-store snacks.
Who eats here has changed. A 떡볶이 vendor told Yonhap that until last year the customers were mostly East Asian and Europeans did not know what 떡볶이 was; a hot-dog seller credited the Netflix film 케이팝 데몬 헌터스 for the Americans and Europeans now in line.
Come after four; the row is thickest from seven. Say how spicy you want it. A Brazilian visitor told Yonhap she asked for 덜 맵게 and got it.
Less spicy, please.
Careful, it's hot.
