The messaging app the whole country runs on. Kakao, the company behind it, also runs Kakao T, the taxi app. Kakao Mobility says Kakao T puts no separate restrictions on foreigners, has linked with overseas ride apps since October 2023, auto-translates your chat with the driver, and takes foreign-issued Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB cards. Kakao Mobility's own data showed most foreign users signing up with a Korean +82 number, usually a prepaid SIM.

Install both before you fly. In Kakao T, switch the language in your profile and register a card. The card step is the one that fails, so give it time. A Korean prepaid SIM makes the rest go smoothly.
